Advanced Web 2.0 Searching With Topsy

Here is a tip for those individuals who wish to go beyond the broad search engines to find information on the social web.

is a real time social search engine that allows users conduct advanced queries with a variety of functionalities available on the platform.

Rather than obtaining a mashup of results from web 2.0 sites (as seen in Figure 1 above), Topsy permits sorting based on type of content such as:

  • Links
  • Tweets
  • Photos
  • Videos

This search tool can also assist in identifying experts based on the number of mentions of keywords in the expert’s tweets.   Figure 2 is the results for the query to uncover experts in the field of “competitive intelligence”.

If users wish, Topsy can be used to search for content on Google Plus and Twitter.  Figure 3 illustrates the results for the query, “LinkedIn” for videos that have been shared on Twitter.

One of the key benefits of using Topsy as the search application for social media content is the ability to access archived information.  Figure 4 is the screenshot of the results for an advanced search, “Facebook Timeline” for the time period: March 31st, 2012 to April 29th, 2012.

The results seen above can be generated by using the advanced search interface as seen in Figure 5.

Other useful features offered by Topsy include:

  • Creating email alerts of query results
  • Sharing resulting on Twitter
  • Sorting results based on language
  • Generating reports from  analytics data (i.e., mentions)
